Environment Matters at Buxton Hilbre Bed and Breakfast
At Buxton Hilbre B and B we are so lucky to be surrounded by stunning countryside, and are very aware that we must all work hard to respect our surroundings. The Peak District National Park Authority is doing a great job, and we encourage guests to support them too by donating.
The Buxton Hilbre B and B commitment to reducing our carbon footprint has not only shaped how we live and run our business, but has also found us getting our guests, involved. By drawing their attention to our: What we do…What you can do…document, we can work together to do our bit! The response from guests has been so positive, and we have really enjoyed sharing ideas.
Reduce
At Buxton Hilbre Bed and Breakfast we are constantly making changes to reduce our energy consumption, and the main ways are outlined for you. Through bulk-buying from Suma, an ethical wholesale cooperative, we reduce packaging and food miles. All our cleaning products and complimentary toiletries are fully bio-degradable, and we only use washable serviettes and table cloths. We are always on the lookout for ‘greener’ products, and recently discovered “soap nuts” laundry product that we can use 3 times and then compost. We are generating our own electricity through PV and solar panels.
Reuse
At Buxton Hilbre Bed and Breakfast we try to make the most of all materials and re-use wherever possible. We have been amazed at just how many plastic bottles we have saved since refilling detergent and toiletry bottles, and our fruit trees are really thriving on our home-made compost. We have always reused plastic bags as bin liners and provide a reusable shopping bag for guests to use during their stay, kindly donated by Derby University along with information for guests about ‘The Dome Campus’ and what they offer here in Buxton. We are delighted with the opportunity for this partnership.
Recycle
In addition to the extensive recycling provided by High Peak Borough Council, we also collect tetra packs , plastic wrapping and batteries that we take to appropriate sites. We compost all fruit, vegetable and tea/coffee scraps, and provide a ‘green box’ with guidance so that you can get involved with “sorting at source.” We are proud to be recycling as much as 80% of our and your household waste.
And it doesn’t stop there! All our tissues, toilet rolls, paper and even kitchen foil are at least 100% recycled, and we continually seek-out alternatives to reduce our environmental impact.

The next project we are currently investigating is a solar hot water system to complement our boiler - if it works in a Buxton B&B it will work anywhere..
